OMICS IN VETERINARY MEDICINE AND ANIMAL SCIENCE

OMICS IN VETERINARY MEDICINE

The goals of animal research include – identifying new gene variants that contribute to the good health of the animal and hence defining gene and protein pathways to aid in the development of new therapeutics. Moreover, animal research efforts also aim to improve the production and quality of the food animal products.

Over the years, Genome Wide Association studies in dairy cattle have identified genomic regions closely associated with milk production. Also, challenging animals such as cows and goats with lipopolysaccharides of gram negative bacteria and testing the milk of these animals using targeted proteomics approaches have led to the identification of several immune responsive proteins.

Animal research conducted with limited resources can still yield exceptional results if the data generated using omics technologies is used to the fullest potential.
